Wine Tasting White:
Jolivet “Attitude” Sauvignon Blanc, Loire Valley, France ($14 per bottle) –
As I write this newsletter, I’m sipping on a great Sauvignon Blanc from Pascal Jolivet. From his vineyard just west of Sancerre in Touraine, this wine does have an attitude! It displays a wonderful freshness showing lemon and lime flavors with an undercurrent that is savory and chalky. It’s too bad that we can’t get fresh oysters because this wine would pair very well.
Wine Tasting Reds:
R-Collection Merlot, Napa Valley, CA ($13 per bottle) –
The R-Collection Merlot has a long history going back to the Raymond family. Bought by the huge French corporation of Jean-Charles Boisset, the wine was made jointly by Stephanie Putnam, Kathy George and Jean-Charles Boisset. The wine continually shows a lot more than its price. It has great smoothness with flavors of black plums and cherries, earth and soft tannins. The winery is located on Zinfandel Lane in Napa Valley, but these grapes come throughout California. A crowd favorite!
R-Collection Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA ($13 per bottle) –
Another staple of Grapes, this is also a great value wine from Jean-Charles Boisset. The wine shows wonderful blackberry, plum and currant flavors with surprising depth and a decent finish.
Bodegas Borsao, Berola, Borja, Spain ($15.00 per bottle) –
From the town of Borja, it was originally called Borsao in the 4th century. Berola is made of the Garnacha and Syrah grape varietals. The wine shows great depth with alluring flavors of deep black plums, earth, cinnamon and a satisfying dryness on the finish. Perfect with baked pork!
