Aloha Grapes Gang –

Holy cow, that was a lot of rain!  I hope that all of you were safe and property secured when Hurricane Lane passed us by.

Because we cancelled last week’s wine tasting, Grapes has rescheduled it for this Thursday, August 30, 2018.  We will feature the same wines that were published last week.

It’s going to be a great tasting in the aftermath of Lane!

Wine Tasting Whites:

Ferrari-Carano, Fume Blanc, Sonoma, CA ($12 per bottle) –
A wine made popular by the late Robert Mondavi, Ferrari-Carano’s Fume Blanc is made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape varietal.  What distinguishes this wine from other Sauvignon Blancs is the use of French oak barrels that give the wine a creamy smoky quality.

San Simeon, Viognier - Stefano Vineyard Estate Reserve, Paso Robles, CA ($19 per bottle) –
From the Riboli family’s estate located in the coastal town of San Simeon, California.  This is one of the best Viognier I’ve tasted in years.  It shows great tropical fruit flavors with fresh apricots and other stone fruit.  Vibrant, clean and refreshing, you must taste this one.  It would pair well with Indian curries.

Wine Tasting Reds:

Hedges Family Estate, CMS, Columbia Valley, Washington State ($15 per bottle) –
A blend of 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 65% Merlot and 8% Syrah, the wine shows a lot of dark cherries, blackberries, licorice and spice with good balance and structure.  Ideal on a rainy day like today.

Bodegas Borsao, Tres Picos, Borja, Spain ($16.00 per bottle) –
Produced using vines planted in the 1950’s, Tres Picos (Three Peaks) grows in 2,300 feet elevation using minimal intervention.  The wine shows dark plums, smoke, leather, allspice, pepper and vanilla.  Would pair well with any grilled food.

Alexander Valley Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, Sonoma, CA ($22 per bottle)
What a find!  Year in year out, Alexander Valley Vineyards produces wonderful Cabernets that show the classic flavors of black currants, blackberries, spice box, tobacco and licorice with balance and restraint.  Perfect for a steak!
